How to Deal with Divorce During the Holidays
Holidays are a time of joy and sharing all of life’s little delights with those you care for the most.
That’s perhaps why dealing with a divorce can put a strain on anyone’s holiday cheer. If you’re feeling stressed and overwhelmed, how can you really put your all into celebrations?
Just as you’ve worked your way through other struggles in life and came out the other side able to smile and laugh during the holidays, you’ll find your way through this one. For those of you dealing with a divorce during this year’s holiday season, here are some things to keep in mind!
-
Practice Patience
Stay patient with yourself, with your family, with your friends and all the important people in your life. Take the holidays one step at a time. Take them at your own pace. If you are still grieving, know that it is okay, but remind yourself of the good in your life as well. With time, the pain will fade, and you may even come out the other side with a deeper love and appreciation of what the holidays mean to you.
-
Don’t Feed Negativity
Going through a divorce can be a painful process, and nothing can bring back old memories like the holidays season. It’s also important, though, to steer clear of self-pity and depressive thoughts. Depression is a slippery slope to head down, and indulging in unhealthy habits, dark thoughts, or wallowing in your own sadness will only make you feel worse. Don’t push people away and resign yourself to doom and gloom during the happiest time of the year!
-
Focus on the Positives
Remember, there are so many things worth celebrating each year –focus on the good things, the happy things, the important things in your life. Share those things with the people you care about, spread some cheer and joy, and you might find that your holiday cheer is there, waiting on you.
